RESUMO

Abstract Traditionally dates is consumed as a rich source of iron supplement and the current research discuss the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using methanolic seed extract of Rothan date and its application over in vitro anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activity against lung cancer cell line (A549). FTIR result of synthesised AgNPs reveals the presence of functional group OH as capping agent. XRD pattern confirms the crystalline nature of the AgNPs with peaks at 38º, 44º, 64º and 81º, indexed by (111), (200), (220) and (222) in the 2θ range of 10-90, indicating the face centered cubic (fcc) structure of metallic Ag. HR- TEM results confirm the morphology of AgNPs as almost spherical with high surface areas and average size of 42 ± 9nm. EDX spectra confirmed that Ag is only the major element present and the Dynamic light scattering (DLS) assisted that the Z-average size was 203nm and 1.0 of PdI value. Zeta potential showed − 26.5mv with a single peak. The results of the biological activities of AgNPs exhibited dose dependent activity with 68.44% for arthritic, antiinflammatory with 63.32% inhibition and anti-proliferative activity illustrated IC50 value of 59.66 µg/mL expressing the potential of AgNPs to combat cancer

RESUMO

Unani system of medicine is being practiced in India for hundreds of years for treating various ailments by its holistic approach with natural means and drugs. Unani formulations are based on herbal, mineral and animal origin. Till date, there is no major development in different forms of the drugs and are being used as they are mentioned in the classical literature. There is need of the hour to devise pharmaceutical processing techniques to achieve palatability, more stability, absorption and assimilability of both single and compound Unani drugs without deviating from the original essence as described in the literature. Fermentation (Takhmīr) may be explored as a unique tool for the modification of dosage forms for herbal Unani drugs. It is a process of chemical change caused by organisms or their products for transformation to another compound of medicinal value. It extracts a wide range of active ingredients from the herb than any other methods of extraction. During fermentation, undesirable molecules like sugars are removed from plant extracts and made the product more bio-available and stable, less toxic and more efficient. In the Unani system of medicine, various products have been mentioned in classical literature where the process of the fermentation is applied for the preparation of drugs like Sirka, Nabeez, Dar Bahra, etc. Fermentation based drugs used in Ayurveda are Asvas and Arishthas are generally found superior to extracts for absorption in the gut with enhanced therapeutic properties, quicker action, and longer shelf life. In order to achieve better therapeutics in Unani Drugs, the process of development of compound formulation based on fermentation should be adopted for different forms of Unani formulations.

RESUMO

Objectives: To know the pelvicalyceal anatomy by radiological method that helps in localizing the calculi or tumors in kidneys. Materials and method: The study was conducted in Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Tamaka, Kolar from 2011 to 2013. Forty four adult, formalin embalmed cadaveric kidneys (20 right and 24 left) were injected with 8 to 10 ml of 10% radio opaque barium sulphate solution into the renal pelvis and calyces and radiographs were taken in anteroposterior view. Results: The observations were statistically analyzed. There were 14 extra renal pelves and 30 intra renal pelves. The major calyces were classified into three categories [Double (D), Three (T) and Multiple (M) divisions]. Out of 44 kidneys 20 were right and 24 left.. 23 kidneys presented multiple (more than 4) calyces, 12 had two major calyces and only 9 presented with three major calyces). Typical ‘Y’ arrangement in 03 out of 12 and typical multiple in 03 out of 23 kidneys. There were 14 kidneys (31.8%) presented with extra renal pelvis whereas 30 kidneys (68.2%) presented intrarenal formation of the renal pelvis. Conclusion: Due to the variation in the number of major and minor calyces, position of renal pelvis (intrarenal and extra renal), the knowledge of pelvicalyceal anatomy will help the urologist and nephrologists to pin point the position of renal calyceal calculi or malignant growth for the surgery to be carried out.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant activity of andrographolide (AND) and echiodinin (ECH) of Andrographis paniculata. Methods:In this study, an attempt has been made to demonstrate the anti-microbial and anti-oxidant activity of isolated AND and ECH by broth micro-dilution method and 2,2-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay, respectively. Structure elucidation was determined by electro-spray ionization-MSD, NMR (1H and 13C) and IR spectra. Results: AND was effective against most of the strains tested including Mycobacteriumsmegmatis, showing broad spectrum of growth inhibition activity with Minimum inhibitory concentration values against Staphylococcus aureus (100 μg/mL), Streptococcus thermophilus (350 μg/mL) Bacillus subtilis (100 μg/mL), Escherichia coli (50 μg/mL), Mycobacterium smegmatis (200 μg/mL), Klebsiella pneumonia (100 μg/mL), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (200 μg/mL). ECH showed specific anti-bacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at a concentration higher than 225 μg/mL. Both AND and ECH were not effective against the two yeast strains, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae tested in this study. Conclusion:This preliminary study showed promising anti-bacterial activity and moderate free radical scavenging activity of AND and ECH, and it may provide the scientific rationale for its popular folklore medicines.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Several instruments have been developed specifically to assess the quality of life (QOL) in HIV infected individuals. No information is available in this aspect from India. The present study was thus carried out to assess the QOL among HIV infected persons, to study their relationship with socio-demographic characteristics and stages of disease progression, and to examine change in QOL over time. METHODS: One time assessment of QOL on 100 and repeat evaluation on 20 HIV infected persons enrolled in an ongoing longitudinal prospective study of clinical progression was done. Medical Outcome Study (MOS-QOL) core instrument was modified to suit the Indian cultural settings and interview-administered. RESULTS: The overall scale had Cronbach alpha 0.75. Instrument showed significant positive inter-domain correlations and linear association between QOL scores and CD4 counts. QOL was markedly affected in the domains of physical health, work and earnings, routine activities, and appetite and food intake. Women had significantly lower QOL scores despite having less advanced disease. The QOL scores decreased with drop in CD4 counts mainly in the physical health domains. Generally, the QOL scores were high in the follow up visit compared to baseline. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: The modified MOS scale with Cronbach alpha of more than 0.7 and linear relationship between CD4 counts and the QOL scores indicated that the instrument was reliable and valid for evaluation of QOL in HIV infected persons in India. Comparative lower scores in the domains of physical health indicate medical intervention to greatly benefit the HIV infected persons. Longitudinal studies need to be undertaken to assess the impact of introduction of anti retroviral therapy (ART) through the national programme on disease progression and changes in QOL.
